About the author

Deng Zhicheng (1887–1960), courtesy name Wenru and literary name Mingzhai, was a native of Jiangning, Jiangsu (present-day Nanjing), and was born in Chengdu, Sichuan. A prominent modern Chinese historian and educator, he taught at Peking University and Yenching University, where he devoted himself to historical teaching and research with a special focus on Ming and Qing history. His works are extensive, and The Two Thousand Years of China is especially influential: originally a general-history lecture course, it was later published in nine volumes, combining the clarity of classroom instruction with solid source criticism. The Complete Collection of Miscellaneous Notes on Antiquities, annotated by Tang Changru, further reflects his wide interests and meticulous scholarship. Deng emphasized using poetry to illuminate history, an approach evident in works such as the Initial Compilation of Qing Poetry with Historical Records and Notes from Reading in the Mulberry Garden. He trained many students in literature and history and holds an important place in modern historical education.
