Lian Shisheng is an author about whom relatively little biographical information is publicly available; his exact nationality, dates of birth and death, and educational background are not clearly documented. Judging from the four works included in the collection, his writing spans essay collections, social commentary, and books for young readers. The five-volume Collected Works of Lian Shisheng presents the breadth of his writing. Two collections of his social commentaries, Insight and Foresight and A Discerning Eye on Society, show his lasting attention to social realities and his ability to draw judgments from everyday phenomena, in a steady and thoughtful style. To the New Youth addresses younger readers, discussing self-cultivation and personal growth in an earnest tone. Classified under classics, examination preparation, and inspirational growth, these works are suited both to reading for pleasure and to reference for young people's study and self-improvement.
