About the author

Jian Sou is an author about whom little is known; public sources are limited, and no clear record has been found of his dates of birth and death, native place, or nationality. The only work currently confirmed to be extant is the novel Xia Pian Qi Wen (Strange Tales of Blind Deception). The book is generally classified as a modern popular novel or a novel of social censure. Centering on the motif of deception, it unfolds its narrative around frauds and swindles, using absurd and bizarre plots to satirize social conditions. Its language is plain and accessible, and it makes frequent use of exaggeration and irony to create comic effect while exposing the ills of the society of its time. Because so few works by the author survive, his life, circle of acquaintances, and full literary output remain difficult to verify, and scholarly attention has focused mainly on Xia Pian Qi Wen itself. The novel has reference value for the compilation and study of modern popular literature and offers a concrete example for understanding the social climate and fictional writing of the late Qing and early Republican period.
