About the author

Fan Heng: publicly available information is limited, and only two works are known to be in circulation: Selected Readings from Chinese Medical Classics and Pang Anshi, the Medical King of the Northern Song. Judging from their subject matter, Fan Heng's focus lies in two directions: Chinese medical scholarship and the history of medical figures. The former involves the selection and arrangement of classic medical texts, a genre commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine colleges for coursework and exam preparation, which is why it is classified under both "examinations" and "medicine." The latter is a topical account of the life and scholarship of Pang Anshi, a physician of the Northern Song dynasty. Taken together, these two threads suggest that the author's writing combines the popularization of canonical texts with the organization of medical history, aimed mainly at students of Chinese medicine and general readers interested in Chinese medical culture. As no reliable records of biography, education, or positions have been found, no speculation is offered here; the above remarks concern only the content and purpose of the extant works.
