About the author

Hu Juren was a Ming-dynasty scholar. Because public information is limited, details of his life and career are not elaborated here. One work by him survives in the collection, the Hu Wenjing Ji, which is classified under Eastern philosophy. The collection consists mainly of writings on learning, dealing with Neo-Confucian themes such as self-cultivation, the investigation of principle, and preserving the mind. Its style is plain and rigorous, centering on the analysis of moral principle rather than rhetorical embellishment. Hu Juren's writing reflects the Ming Confucian tendency to return from breadth to essentials and to stress earnest practice. His discussions are regarded by later readers as useful material for studying the transmission of Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucianism in the Ming. Since verifiable biographical details are few, understanding of him rests chiefly on this collection, through which readers may grasp his scholarly concerns and argumentative style and thereby gain a sense of the basic character of Ming philosophical literature.
