About the author

Zhang Kaiyuan (1926–2021) was a renowned Chinese historian and educator, born in Wuhu, Anhui, with ancestral roots in Wuxing, Zhejiang. He served as president of Central China Normal University and founded its Institute of Modern Chinese History, making pioneering contributions to the study of the 1911 Revolution, Chinese chamber of commerce history, the history of Christian universities, and documentary research on the Nanjing Massacre. The library holds six of his works, including the personal memoir Trivial Matters of an Ordinary Person, the fourth volume of the Historical Materials on the Nanjing Massacre: Diaries and Letters of American Missionaries, and compiled historical materials on General Stilwell and the China Theater and on the retrocession of Taiwan. These works, mostly documentary literature and historical reading, are distinguished by the careful compilation of primary sources and a rigorous, verifiable approach to history.
