About the author

Dou Cai is a figure in the history of traditional Chinese medicine, but his birthplace, dates of birth and death, and other biographical details are not clearly recorded. Publicly available information is limited, making it difficult to reconstruct his full life. What can be confirmed is that three works by him are held in the collection, all titled Bian Que Xin Shu (The Heart Book of Bian Que), indicating that this is his representative medical work. Judging from the title and its common classification, the book belongs to the field of traditional medicine and deals with clinical diagnosis and treatment as well as medical theory, reflecting the author's organization of earlier medical experience and his own insights. Owing to the scarcity of historical sources, modern understanding of Dou Cai still depends mainly on this text. The repeated inclusion of the work also suggests that it circulated to some extent within Chinese medical literature and has reference value for the study of traditional medical concepts and clinical methods.
