程登吉

Cheng Dengji is the author of Youxue Qionglin (The Treasury of Learning for Children). Public information about his life is limited: his nationality, dates of birth and death, and English name are not clearly recorded. Judging from the four works held in the collection, his writing centers on traditional Chinese primers and readings on traditional culture. His representative work is Youxue Qionglin, and other editions and related texts, such as Youxue Qiuyuan Youxue Xuzhi and an annotated edition in the Chinese Classics series, also circulate. Works of this kind string together common knowledge of astronomy, geography, institutions, ethics, and customs in simple, orderly phrasing that is easy for beginners to memorize. They serve both cultural popularization and literary appreciation, are often classified under culture, literary appreciation, and Eastern philosophy, and have had a lasting influence on traditional elementary education.
