About the author

Cheng Minzheng was a learned literatus and scholar of the Ming dynasty. Because public information is limited, the details of his life cannot be fully presented. Judging from the works that have come down to us, he was skilled both in compiling documents and in personal writing. Ming Wen Heng is an anthology of Ming prose that reflects his editorial judgment and standards of selection in organizing the writings of an era, while Huangdun Wenji collects his own poems and prose and reveals his writing style and intellectual interests. One is a compilation and the other a personal collection; taken together, they show that he valued both the preservation and transmission of documents and personal expression. His works are often classified under Eastern philosophy and classic works, which indicates that his writings have retained intellectual and exemplary significance for later readers. Although biographical information is insufficient, the extant works still allow us to grasp his scholarly concerns and literary character, offering a reference for understanding the compiling practices and writing traditions of Ming literati.
