About the author

Qin Chun is an author about whom very little biographical information survives in Chinese classical sources; his native place, dates of birth and death, and courtesy name are not clearly recorded, and available public material is limited. Three of his works are currently held in the collection: Zhao Feiyan Biezhuan (unannotated edition), Zhao Feiyan Biezhuan, and Zhao Hou Yishi. All three center on the palace affairs of the Han-dynasty sisters Zhao Feiyan and Zhao Hede and belong to the tradition of chuanqi tales drawn from historical figures. Works of this kind combine historical narrative with the marvels and legends of the zhiguai tradition; their storytelling is indirect and graceful, their language refined, and they often use palace anecdotes to reflect on worldly affairs. They have had some influence on later fiction and drama. Because the relevant sources are insufficient, Qin Chun's exact identity and the full scope of his writing remain difficult to establish, and readers may approach his writing orientation and textual character through the three extant works.
