Zhu Jie is an author about whom very little biographical information is available. His real name, place of origin, dates of birth and death, and educational background are not clearly recorded, and the limited public materials make it difficult to sketch a complete life story. Two works by him are currently held in the collection, both titled A Narrative of the Troubles in Shu, which recounts events and hearsay concerning unrest in the Shu region. The works combine local historical incident with folk rumor, and are therefore classified under Eastern philosophy and folk literature. Judging from his subject matter, Zhu Jie was drawn to the turbulent experiences of local society and to orally transmitted narrative. His style is close to a factual record of what was seen and heard, with emphasis on preserving observations rather than elaborating argument. Because his output is small and circulated within a limited range, his writing style and influence await further evidence; readers may nonetheless glimpse his choice of material and narrative interests through A Narrative of the Troubles in Shu.
