About the author

Pi Rixiu was a literary figure of the late Tang dynasty. Public sources differ on his birth and death dates and place of origin, and little is reliably known about his early life. Four of his works are included here: "Miscellaneous Poems on Tea: Boiling Tea," "Three Poems Remembering Dr. Hua Yangrunqing," "Runqing and Luwang Visit on a Cold Night," and "A Banquet in the Apricot Garden During the Cold Food Festival After Passing the Examination." Their subjects range from tea drinking and poetic exchanges with friends to banquets and reflections after passing the imperial examination, showing that his writing was closely tied to daily life and social circles. His style combines elegance with substance; his language is concise, and he often uses concrete images to convey feeling. Some works carry a philosophical tone, consistent with their usual classification under ancient poetry, Eastern philosophy, and folk literature. Though his output was not vast, Pi Rixiu retains a place in mid- and late Tang poetry and in the literature of tea culture, offering insight into the tastes and inner world of Tang literati.
