About the author

Wang Jiaju is a Chinese author of essays and miscellaneous prose. Public information about him is limited, and details such as his nationality, birth and death years, and personal background are not clearly recorded. Judging from the three works held in the collection, however, his writing centers on the changes of urban life, everyday objects, and local culture. His representative works include A Century of Change in Clothing, Food, Housing and Transport (with two other pieces), Street Fragments, and Two Old Talks on Yangzhou. These works tend to begin with ordinary daily experience—dress, food, housing, and transport—and examine it across a span of a hundred years, or use street observations and old-city anecdotes to connect local customs and human feeling. His prose is documentary and essayistic, attentive to detail and the texture of everyday life, and has a certain value for preserving local memory and everyday culture.
