About the author

Wang Xiang's biographical details are very limited in publicly available records; his name is known to later generations chiefly through two primers he compiled. The Thousand Family Poems (Qianjia Shi) attributed to him was an extremely widely circulated poetry anthology in earlier times. It selects short regulated verses by famous Tang and Song poets, arranged by season and theme, with plain language and harmonious rhythm. It long served as a reader for children reciting poetry and for scholars' elementary education, and had a profound influence on the popularization of classical poetry among ordinary people. Baijiaxing Kaolüe examines the traditional surname primer, tracing the origins of surnames and related allusions, showing an interest in family genealogies and elementary learning. One is a poetry anthology and the other a study of surnames; both belong to the field of traditional elementary education, and their content and arrangement reflect the old primers' emphasis on recitation, literacy, and everyday moral knowledge. Because direct materials about Wang Xiang himself are limited, details of his career, native place, and social circle remain difficult to verify, and later readers remember him mainly as a compiler of elementary primers.
