About the author

Wang Shouchang's biographical details are limited in publicly available sources; his birth and death years, native place, and educational background are not conclusively recorded. Judging from the three works held in the collection, his writing covers a notably broad range: there is The Lady of the Camellias, associated with Lin Shu's translated fiction, a work of classical poetry criticism titled Remarks on Poetry from the Small Tsinghua Garden, and another work classified under Eastern philosophy. The first is connected to the late Qing fashion for introducing foreign fiction, while the latter two show his attention to China's classical poetic and intellectual traditions. A combination of original writing and translation, spanning Chinese and Western materials, is the most noteworthy feature of his extant record. Because his output is small, his influence is chiefly visible in the circulation and reading of individual texts, and his overall profile awaits further documentation.
