About the author

Wang Shixing is an author in premodern China known for his writings on local customs and conditions. Owing to limited public information, details of his life and official career are difficult to establish today. Judging from the works that survive, he was concerned with the mountains, rivers, customs, local products, and folk observations of various regions, and his writing combines geographical inquiry with miscellaneous notes. His representative work, Guangzhiyi, embodies this approach: it proceeds region by region, records what he saw and heard, and is plain and concrete in style, with a strong documentary quality that also preserves a number of folk legends and local anecdotes. In common classifications, Wang Shixing's works are often placed under Eastern philosophy and folk literature, which indicates both that his accounts touch on ideas and popular beliefs and that later readers have recognized his writings for their historical and literary value. Although many details of his life remain unknown, his works still offer readable material for the study of local society and regional culture in earlier times.
