About the author

Wang Yuan (1930–2021) was a mathematician and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Born in Lanxi, Zhejiang, with ancestral roots in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu, he graduated from Zhejiang University in 1952 and studied number theory under Hua Luogeng. In work on Goldbach's conjecture he proved the results "3+4," "3+3," "2+3," and "1+4," helping to bring China to the forefront of research in this field; he also co-developed the Hua–Wang method with Hua Luogeng and, with Fang Kaitai, founded the uniform design method. Beyond his mathematical writings, he is known to readers for his popular-science writing and science-fiction work. Fifteen of his titles are held in the collection, spanning popular science, biography, and science fiction, including My Brain Is Open: The Mathematical Journeys of Paul Erdős, Footprints of Physics, and Science That Changed the World.
