About the author

Wang Shimao was a literatus of the Ming dynasty, and his name appears on works such as Yipu Xieyu, Kuitian Waicheng, Minbu Shu, and Erying Weitan Zhaolu. Public information about his birth and death dates, native place, official career, and family background is limited, so no speculation is made here. Judging from the surviving works, his writings involve poetic criticism, local customs, and miscellaneous records of things seen and heard, and are commonly classified under classical poetry, culture, Eastern philosophy, and classic works. Yipu Xieyu discusses the art and appreciation of poetry in concise language that stresses personal savoring; Minbu Shu records the local conditions of Fujian and is close to notes and local gazetteers; Kuitian Waicheng and Erying Weitan Zhaolu resemble miscellaneous notes, combining observations with textual inquiry. Overall, his writing follows the tradition of literati jottings, modest in length but varied in content, and offers a glimpse of Ming scholars' reading interests and local knowledge.
