About the author

Pan Guangdan (1899–1967) was a native of Baoshan, Jiangsu, and a modern Chinese sociologist, eugenicist, ethnologist and educator. He taught at Tsinghua School, Tsinghua University and the National Southwestern Associated University, and later at the Central University for Nationalities. Blending Confucian thought with Western science, he proposed the ideas of "new humanism" and "weiyu" (adaptation and nurture), and his scholarship spanned sociology, ethnology and psychology. His works range from academic monographs such as Principles of Eugenics and A Study of the Blood Relations of Chinese Actors to essays and popular writings on art, biography, culture and social psychology. He also translated and annotated Havelock Ellis's Psychology of Sex; his rigorous yet accessible prose has influenced both academic research and the spread of knowledge.
