About the author

Hao Ran (1932–2008), whose real name was Liang Jinguang, was a contemporary Chinese writer from Baodi, Hebei. He served as chairman of the Beijing Writers Association and editor-in-chief of Beijing Literature, and long upheld the creative principle of "writing about peasants and writing for peasants," drawing much of his material from rural life and the inner world of ordinary people. His major novels, including Bright Sunny Skies, The Golden Road, and The Common People, show his sustained attention to changes in rural society; The Common People, in particular, portrays the fate of peasants in a solid, realistic style. The library also includes Sons and Daughters of Xisha and the motivational work Self-Control: A Harvard University Public Course for Life, reflecting the range of his writing across social fiction and inspirational growth.
