About the author

Asada Sohaku was a Kampo (traditional Japanese medicine) physician active from the late Edo period into the Meiji era. His formal name was Koretsune, his courtesy name Sohaku, and he was commonly known as Rikuen. Born in Shinano Province, he studied medicine in his early years and later became known for both his medical skill and his grounding in Chinese classical learning. One of his representative works is Sensetsu Iwa, a collection of sayings and case records of Japanese physicians through the ages, together with introductory remarks on Chinese medical classics. Its judgments are precise and its prose refined, reflecting both his deep command of literary Chinese and his scholarly approach, which drew on both Chinese and Japanese medicine and valued clinical evidence. The book circulated widely and remains a useful reference for understanding the origins of Kampo medicine and the thought of its practitioners. Public information is limited, and his exact dates and detailed biography require further verification.
