About the author

Shen Hong's publicly available information is limited, but his writings center mainly on the history and cultural landscape of the late Qing and modern China. Judging from the five works held in the collection, he attends both to the scholarly integrity of figures from the Imperial University of Peking to the old Peking University and to records of China written from foreign perspectives: the everyday life of late Qing townspeople as depicted by an English woman writer, the late Qing history recorded in the Illustrated London News from 1842 to 1873, and early twentieth-century foreign travelers' accounts of the Five Sacred Mountains and the Yangtze River. These works are mostly historical readings and translations of foreign literature, with some involvement in social fiction, showing the author's sustained interest in combing historical sources and organizing cross-cultural texts. His writing tends to present the concrete details of everyday life and the spirit of individuals in a given era through primary materials, offering readers accessible references for understanding social change from the late Qing to the early Republic.
