About the author

Shen Xiaozhan is an important Qing-dynasty author of works on the Ziping system of fate calculation. Public sources are limited, and his birth and death years, native place, and life details remain unknown; his name has come down to us mainly through his writings. Three related works are held in the collection, including the original Ziping Zhenquan and a commentary edition attributed to Shen Xiaozhan of the Qing dynasty, all centered on the eight-character system of destiny analysis. Ziping Zhenquan systematically discusses structural patterns, useful gods, and the configuration of the ten gods. It is clear in organization and restrained in argument, and is regarded in the history of fate calculation as a pivotal work that bridges earlier and later traditions; later commentators and researchers have often used it as both an introductory and an advanced reader. His writing emphasizes theoretical synthesis and case analysis, is concise in language, and rarely elaborate; its influence lies mainly in the compilation and transmission of traditional fate-calculation and physiognomy literature, and its common classifications also touch on social culture.
