About the author

Wang Qishi was a physician in ancient China. His life, native place, and dates of birth and death can no longer be reliably determined, and available public information is very limited. The medical work attributed to him that survives today is Li Xu Yuan Jian (Fundamental Insights into Treating Deficiency), of which three different editions are held in the collection; sharing the same source text, they show that the book was reprinted several times over the course of its transmission. The work focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of consumptive and deficiency disorders in traditional Chinese medicine, discussing their causes and mechanisms, key points of pattern differentiation, and methods of regulation and treatment, and it also records formulas and clinical observations. Its language is concise and its organization clear, reflecting an academic approach that emphasizes the spleen and kidneys and advocates gradual, patient regulation. Though modest in length, specialized books of this kind were valued by later physicians for their clinical practicality and remain important references for the study of deficiency and consumption theory in Chinese medicine. Because historical sources are lacking, his native place, teachers, and medical career cannot be described in detail; readers should rely on the content of the original text rather than adding biographical details based on hearsay.
