About the author

Tang Shu's dates, courtesy name, native place, and other biographical details are not well documented in publicly available sources. What survives is chiefly material he compiled or edited concerning city defense in the Song dynasty. Four related works are held in the collection: the upper and lower parts of The Record of Defending De'an and The Record of Defending Cities, along with another version titled The Record of Defending Cities: Song Dynasty, Chen Gui. His focus thus lies in urban fortification, defensive experience, and military records. These writings belong to the traditional military literature and are practical and documentary in character, describing defensive strategies, siege and defense situations, and the military-administrative context of the time rather than offering abstract discussion of warfare. His style is plain and concise, devoted to preserving experience and facts for later reference. Such works are often regarded as classics of military writing and as sources for traditional culture, and they retain reference value for the study of Song-era city defense and the transmission of military texts. Owing to limited sources, his life, official career, and associations cannot yet be described in detail.
