About the author

Jiang Shunyi is an author whose dates, native place, and official career can no longer be reliably established; public information about him is limited. All that is currently known is that a single work, Cixue Jicheng (A Comprehensive Compendium of Ci Poetics), survives under his name. The book belongs to the field of classical poetry and is devoted to the ci form, addressing diction, syntax, tonal patterns, and rhyme, as well as the appraisal and arrangement of earlier ci works. It reflects the compiler's concern with the norms of the ci genre and his effort to gather the achievements of earlier ci scholarship. Judging from its title and approach, Jiang's writing emphasizes the organization of materials and the construction of a systematic framework; it is practical in manner rather than given to empty discussion, and it offers reference value for later students of ci poetics. Because records are scarce, his ancestry, circle of associates, and intellectual background cannot be described in detail, and any assessment of the man and his work should rest chiefly on this one surviving book.
