About the author

Jiang Guan's life and dates are poorly documented in publicly available sources. Existing materials can only confirm that he was a compiler of medical literature in ancient China and that the work Mingyi Lei'an (Classified Cases of Famous Physicians) has been transmitted under his name. The library holds two works by him, both belonging to that same book. Drawing extensively on the clinical records of physicians across the ages and arranging them by disease category, the book preserves a large body of otherwise scattered case records. It is an important reference for studying clinical reasoning in traditional Chinese medicine and the genre of medical case writing, and it has had a lasting influence on later compilations of this kind. Owing to limited historical sources, details such as Jiang Guan's native place, social status, associations, and the circumstances in which the book was compiled still await further research; unverified biographical information should not be added.
