About the author

Jiang Xiufu is an author about whom very little is publicly known; his courtesy name, native place, and official career cannot be reliably ascertained. Extant bibliographic records show that he wrote three works—Jia You Za Zhi, Jiang Linji Za Zhi, and Li Quan Bi Lu—generally classified among classic works and Eastern philosophy. The titles, containing words such as "miscellany" and "notes," suggest a genre of random jottings, likely recording observations, reading reflections, and comments on people and affairs in a concise and plain style. That the three works circulated together indicates they were once read among scholars and catalogued by later bibliographers. Because the original texts are lost or poorly transmitted, their full character cannot now be reconstructed, yet as part of the miscellany tradition they offer clues to the intellectual interests and note-writing practices of scholars of the period.
