About the author

Wu Yuanheng was a poet of the Tang dynasty; reliable public information about his dates, birthplace, and career is limited. Five of his works are included here, among them "Revisiting the Fork in the Road," "Seeing Off General Bai Again," "Picking New Tea at Jinliang Temple with the Staff," and "Writing to Shi Jin and Cui Ji by Lamplight on an Autumn Rainy Night," with "Seeing Off General Bai Again" appearing twice. Judging from these titles, his writing centers on farewells, travel, tea gatherings at temples, and remembering friends on rainy nights. Some pieces are occasional poems of parting and correspondence, while others express feeling through landscape and reflection, in a concise, restrained style that reflects the social life and daily experience of Tang scholars. He is commonly grouped under classical poetry, Eastern philosophy, and culture, which suggests that his work is read for both literary and cultural interest. Because surviving information is limited, details of his life and the full scope of his writing remain to be studied further, and readers may approach his style through the individual poems.
