About the author

Zhi An (born 1959), originally named Wang Jinwen, was born in Beijing and is a writer and scholar. He has worked as a doctor, journalist, foreign-company employee, and publishing-house editor, and is now a freelance writer; this varied experience has given his writing and scholarship a distinctive perspective. His work spans both prose and essays and the editing of classic works. He is the author of Zhou Zuoren Zhuan, Xibie, Chuxia Duzhuang, Shenquan Kao, and Chahua Dizi, and is especially known for his research on Zhou Zuoren and Zhang Ailing; he has also edited the Complete Works of Zhang Ailing and the Complete Translations of Zhou Zuoren. Three of his works are included in this collection—the 12-volume set Complete Translations of Zhou Zuoren, Gushuo Ji, and Fengyue Haotan—showing that he combines original writing with scholarly research. His prose is steady and restrained, blending academic rigor with an essayist's sensibility.
