About the author

Gu Liangchu is a figure in the Chinese classical tradition associated with the interpretation of the Spring and Autumn Annals, and his name appears in connection with the Chunqiu Guliang Zhuan. Publicly available information about his life is limited: his nationality, dates of birth and death, and English name are not definitively recorded, making it difficult to outline his personal career or scholarly lineage. The library currently holds three related works, including the Confucian classic Chunqiu Guliang Zhuan, an unannotated edition of the same text, and the twenty-one-volume Essential Readings in Classical Chinese Studies; they are commonly classified under Eastern philosophy and classic works. As one of the three commentaries on the Spring and Autumn Annals, the Guliang Zhuan explains the classic passage by passage in a question-and-answer form, emphasizing moral principles and praise-and-blame judgments in a concise style. It is an important source for studying the history and Confucian thought of the Spring and Autumn period. Gu Liangchu's name has been transmitted through this classic, and his influence lies mainly in the transmission of classical scholarship and the reading of Chinese classics.
