About the author

Chai Xuan is a Chinese author and compiler of photography books, though public information about him is limited. Four of his works are included here: the second and third editions of Chinese Imagery: An Interpretation of Creative Photography, On the Road: Memories of Images Across the Eras, and A Study of Pictorial Photography in the Eastern Context. All fall under photography and address the interpretation of creative photographic works, the organization of images as records of their times, and the exploration of pictorial photography within an Eastern cultural context. They show an interest both in the creative expression of photographic images and in the relationship between images, their eras, and cultural tradition. As no reliable records of his birth and death dates, nationality, education, positions, or awards are available, no inferences are made here; this note introduces only the themes and directions of his work.
