Lin Bi is an author about whom little is known; publicly available information is limited, and his courtesy name, native place, dates of birth and death, and official career cannot be verified. At present, only one work by him, The Lin Dengzhou Collection, is known to survive. Judging from the title, the collection may be connected to his service or residence in Dengzhou, and its contents appear to consist mainly of traditional literati prose and verse, including descriptions of local scenery and poems of social exchange, written in a plain and unadorned style with little ornamentation. In the library the work is classified under Eastern philosophy, suggesting that it may contain essays on learning, self-cultivation, or commentary on worldly affairs, reflecting the author's concern with Confucian principles and the conduct of life. Because surviving records are scattered, Lin Bi's intellectual lineage and literary standing are difficult to describe in detail; his collection is preserved chiefly as a local document and a source for the history of thought, allowing researchers to examine the intellectual interests and spiritual orientation of the literati of his time.
