Yang Biao is known only through his authorship of the Liaoyang Zhouzhi (Gazetteer of Liaoyang Prefecture). Very little is documented about his life: his birthplace, official career, and dates of birth and death all remain unknown in publicly available sources. The work itself belongs to the genre of local gazetteers, a kind of historical writing that records a region's geography, administrative divisions, customs, local products, and notable figures. It is an important source for understanding the local history of Liaoyang in the Qing period. The gazetteer shows that Yang Biao was familiar with local lore and valued firsthand observation checked against written records; his style is factual and clearly organized, with little empty rhetoric. Today readers know him mainly through this surviving work, which preserves a fairly systematic record of Liaoyang's past and offers a useful text for the study of regional history in Northeast China.
