About the author

Yang Jue's life and native place are not well documented in publicly available sources, so an understanding of the man and his thought must rest on his surviving works. The library holds four works associated with him: Annotated Collected Works of the Four Masters of Pinyang, Annotated Surviving Drafts of Mr. Yang of Hushan, Annotated Family Letters of Yang Jue, and The Collected Works of Yang Zhongjie, most of which are collated and annotated editions. In subject matter his writings touch on history, classical works, literary appreciation, and Eastern philosophy. They include both literary collections and surviving drafts as well as private writings such as family letters, showing a writer attentive to both scholarship and everyday self-cultivation. Titles such as Hushan and Zhongjie suggest that his writings carry some weight in local documents and the scholar's tradition, with the family letters offering especially valuable first-hand material for understanding his thought and character. Overall, Yang Jue's works are grounded in traditional prose and poetry and Confucian self-cultivation, and will appeal to readers interested in the collation of ancient texts and classical thought.
