About the author

Yang Dongliang is a Chinese scholar working on modern Japanese history and the history of Sino-Japanese relations; public information about him is limited, and no systematic account of his life has been made available. Judging from the five works held in the collection, his writing centers on the evolution of Japan's modern national policy and its foreign strategy. The four-volume Studies on Japan's Post-World War I Policy "Turn" and Misjudgments in Foreign Strategy, also issued as a collected set, treats the general introduction, the origins, the launching, and the dead end of that policy turn, spanning the years from 1918 to 1945. Taking the "policy turn" as its main thread, the study examines Japan's strategic choices between the two world wars and the mechanisms of misjudgment behind them, combining a clear central question and a coherent structure with broad synthesis and careful use of historical sources. It offers a systematic reference for understanding the institutional and decision-making roots of Japan's road to defeat.
