About the author

Yang Tiancai is an author about whom little public information is available; his nationality, dates of birth and death, and educational background are not clearly recorded. Judging from the two works held in the collection, Zhouyi and Can You Really Understand the I Ching, his writing centers on the Zhouyi, the ancient Chinese classic, and consists of interpretations and popularizations aimed at general readers. Such works usually combine attention to the original text with exposition of its meaning, seeking to render the difficult hexagram and line statements intelligible to modern readers, and to develop a personal mode of expression somewhere between historical writing and literary prose. On the available evidence, Yang Tiancai's focus is on guiding readers into the world of Yijing studies in plain language and helping them grasp its ways of thinking and cultural content, rather than on purely academic textual research. His output remains small, and the reach and reception of his work call for further observation; his choice of subject nonetheless reflects a sustained interest in making traditional classics accessible.
