杨周翰

Yang Zhouhan was an important scholar and translator in the field of foreign literature studies in China; available public information is limited, so the details of his life cannot be described at length. Judging from the seven collected works held here, his work follows two strands, translation and research: on one hand he translated and introduced classical works such as Virgil's Aeneid and Ovid's Metamorphoses and Ars Poetica; on the other he wrote Seventeenth-Century English Literature and left texts such as The Mirror and the Jigsaw, which combine essayistic and scholarly notes. His range spans ancient Greece and Rome as well as England, and covers epic, drama, fiction and literary criticism, showing a coherent grasp of the sources of Western literature. His translations balance accuracy with readability and have had a certain influence in the translation and teaching of foreign literature.
