About the author

Li Shunxian's life is unknown, and publicly available information is limited. At present, only one work by this author is known to survive, "Composed by Imperial Command at the Shu Palace," commonly classified as ancient poetry. Judging from the title, "Shu Palace" points to the courts of the Former Shu or Later Shu during the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, while "by imperial command" indicates that the poem was written at the ruler's behest and belongs to the category of court poetry composed on command. Such works were often produced on occasions of banqueting, sightseeing, or festival celebration, and their content generally centers on palace gardens, music, and feasting. Their language tends to be polished and ornate, with a clear tone of praise and social courtesy. Li Shunxian's poem is thus both a concrete piece of evidence for literary activity at the Shu court and a sample of how poems written on imperial command were composed at the time. Because the author's life and other works cannot be verified, their literary standing and influence are difficult to assess fully; readers may approach the poem through its title and genre within the tradition of ancient court poetry.
