Li Wenjie

Li Wenjie was born in 1982 in Hanchuan, Hubei. He holds a doctorate from the Department of History at Peking University and is now a professor in the Department of History at East China Normal University and vice dean of the Si-Mian Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities. His research focuses on late Qing history, the history of modern Chinese political institutions, and modern frontier and diplomatic history. Five of his works are included here, spanning history, essays and miscellaneous writings, and medicine. His representative book, The Formation of China's Modern Diplomatic Corps, 1861–1911, traces the emergence of that group. Distinguishing Colors at Court: Late Qing Court Assemblies, Documents, and Political Decision-Making and Sunset at Qianqing Gate: Modern Fortunes and Figures examine late Qing politics through court assemblies, documents, and individuals, while his edition of Two Yingyao Diaries contributes to the compilation of historical sources. His writing is grounded in archival material and attentive to institutional detail and personal fate, balancing scholarly research with accessible historical narrative.
