About the author

Zhu Yuanbi is an author about whom little is known. Publicly available sources offer scant information: neither his nationality, nor his dates of birth and death, nor an English name has been clearly recorded. All that is currently known is that one work by him survives, the Youji Bian (roughly, "What I Have Been Able to Gather"), commonly classified under literary appreciation. The title suggests something one has managed to catch or record in time, and given the title and its classification, the book appears to belong to the genre of miscellaneous notes and jottings, chiefly concerned with the evaluation and appreciation of poetry and prose, in the manner of reading notes left by a traditional man of letters. Since only this single work is held and the author's background lacks verifiable material, present understanding of the man and his book rests mainly on the Youji Bian itself, and a fuller picture of his life and his work as a whole remains to be established through further research.
