Cao Zu, whose years of birth and death, native place, and nationality are all unknown, is a figure about whom public information is limited. Only two extant works are currently known under his name, the Complete Ci of Cao Zu and the Collected Ci of Cao Zu, commonly classified as classical poetry. Judging from the surviving works, Cao Zu was chiefly known for his ci, which mostly center on daily life and personal feelings. His language is lucid and natural, and he excels at creating atmosphere with concise strokes, expressing emotion in a restrained yet lingering manner. Though not among the great masters of Song-dynasty ci, his works possess a delicate, graceful quality of their own and offer some reference value for understanding the diversity of ci writing of his time. Because biographical materials are scarce, further details about his associations, official career, and creative background await textual research; for now, only a preliminary account of his style and thematic concerns can be given based on the preserved ci.
