Fang Shao was a literatus of the Song dynasty. Publicly available information about his life, including his dates, native place, and official career, is limited, and surviving records chiefly concern his writings. Two of his works are included here: Bozhai Bian and Qingxi Kougui. In subject matter, Fang Shao's writing shows a clear character of notes and historical records: the former mostly records observations and miscellaneous matters, while the latter concerns local disturbances in the Song dynasty, offering later readers reference for understanding the social conditions of the time. His style is generally plain and concise, primarily descriptive and sparing in extended discussion, reflecting the orientation of Song dynasty note writers toward preserving what they saw and heard. Although the details of Fang Shao's life are difficult to verify, these two works have secured him a place among writers of Song notes and historical materials, and they are often classed as classic works for readers studying Song history and documents.
