About the author

Dai Kaizhi is the author of the ancient Chinese work on natural history known as the Bamboo Manual (Zhupu). Beyond this, public sources offer very limited information about his life: his birth and death years, native place, and official career are all difficult to establish with certainty. The extant Bamboo Manual describes the forms, varieties, places of origin, and uses of bamboo in rhymed prose; it is clearly organized and plain in style, and is regarded as one of China's earlier specialized treatises on bamboo, holding pioneering significance in botanical knowledge and the tradition of natural history. The book centers on the characteristics of bamboo and also touches on cultivation, harvesting, and everyday utensils, reflecting the author's careful observation of natural products and his practical attitude. Because the historical sources are scattered, many details of Dai Kaizhi's life remain uncertain, and scholars usually infer them from the Bamboo Manual itself and later bibliographic records. Though brief, his work provided a model for later writings on bamboo and for agricultural and horticultural learning, and it occupies a place in social-science and natural-history literature.
