About the author

Xu Xun is an author whose work spans two areas: foreign literature and prose essays. Public information about him is limited, and his nationality, dates of birth and death, and educational background are not clearly recorded. Six of his works are held in the collection, including the two-volume The Life of Maugham and Of Human Bondage, which indicate that he has done introductory and translational work in foreign literature, focusing on Maugham's life and writings. He is also the author of the Xu Xun Prose Annual Series, including Snowfield Without End, Wanhe Sketches, Bright Rain, and Autumn Hills and Rushing Water. Judging from these titles and from the common categories, his essays tend to draw on natural scenery and local life, written in a plain and delicate style and showing the traces of sustained writing in an annual-series format. Seen together, the two kinds of work show his dual engagement in translation and introduction on the one hand and prose writing on the other.
