Xu Gang

Xu Gang (born 1945) is a native of Chongming, Shanghai, and a graduate of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at Peking University. A contemporary Chinese poet and writer, he is known as "the father of Chinese ecological literature." He first gained recognition for poetry and essays, then turned to ecological literature and reportage. His works often focus on nature and ecology, memories of home, and the fate of rivers such as the Yangtze, combining documentary observation with literary craft and standing as a representative voice in contemporary ecological writing. His major works include Wake Up, Loggers, Guarding the Homeland, Biography of the Yangtze, and The Great Forest. He has received the Lu Xun Literature Prize and the Xu Chi Reportage Prize, among others.
