About the author

Gui Youguang was an important prose writer of Ming-dynasty China, later often referred to as "Master Zhenchuan," a name also borne by his collected works, the Zhenchuan xiansheng ji. Public information about his birth and death dates, native place, examination career, and official posts is limited, so no speculation is offered here. Judging from the two works held in this collection, Gui Youguang ji and Zhenchuan xiansheng ji, his writing is chiefly in the classical prose tradition, encompassing narrative, lyrical, and discursive pieces. His style is plain and restrained, and he excelled at drawing feeling from everyday life and the people around him, achieving resonance without elaboration. This intimate, detail-driven approach set him apart amid the prevalent archaizing trends of the Ming and left a lasting mark on the lyrical tradition of later prose. This site classifies him under Eastern philosophy and social sciences, focusing on the ethical concerns and social observation visible in his writings, which may be read both as literature and as thought.
