About the author

Zhang Zhuo was a Tang dynasty man of letters whose biographical details are scarce in publicly available sources; both his dates and native place remain uncertain. Judging from his extant works, he wrote in several genres, including parallel-prose judgments, note-form anecdotes, and miscellaneous records, moving between official practicalities and everyday observations. His Dragon Sinew and Phoenix Marrow Judgments is known for antithetical, allusion-rich judgment texts and stands as a model of Tang judgment writing. A Record of Court and Country compiles anecdotes from official and popular circles in a concise, sometimes pointed style, offering vivid material on Tang social life. Other collections such as Records of Ears and Eyes continue this wide-ranging approach to gathering observations. His works are of reference value in literary and political-cultural studies and are often classified under literature and Eastern philosophy.
