Zhang Li

Zhang Li (born 1933), a native of Cangxian, Hebei, is a research fellow at the Institute of Foreign Literature, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He formerly served as head of the Division of Central and Northern European, Ancient Greek and Roman Literature and as president of the Chinese Association for German Literature Studies. A 1959 graduate of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at Leipzig University in Germany, he has long engaged in the study and translation of German literature. His translations include Hamburg Dramaturgy, Brecht on Theatre and Wagner's Dramatic Works, and he is the author of Essays on German Literature. His works in the library span foreign literature, examinations, medicine, language and writing, management, and agriculture and forestry. They range from translations of German literature such as Steppenwolf and The Caucasian Chalk Circle to language titles such as Business Chinese Expansion and Research on Spoken Business Chinese: An Investigation and Analysis of On-site Sales Promotion Language, as well as medical popular-science books such as Human Surface Anatomy and Better to Know Some Medicine Than to Seek Treatment. As public information is limited, his biographical details should not be over-inferred, yet his interests clearly cross literary translation, language research and medical popularization.
