About the author

Zhang Zan, whose dates and biography remain unknown, is known only through limited public records. Surviving catalog information shows three works under his name, the representative one being Dongzheng Jixing Lu (Record of an Eastern Journey), alongside a variant-titled edition, Dongzheng Jixing Lu in traditional characters, suggesting the text circulated under different titles or in different editions. His works are commonly classified under classical literature and Eastern philosophy, indicating writing that combines the literary character of travel narrative with philosophical reflection. Judging by its title, Dongzheng Jixing Lu is a travel record that uses the sights and encounters of a journey as its thread, blending documentation with discussion in a style close to traditional literary Chinese. Since neither his dates, native place, nor official career can be verified, his place in literary history is difficult to assess; nevertheless, the book's placement in both classical literature and Eastern philosophy reflects later readers' recognition of its dual literary and intellectual value and offers a useful text for the study of ancient travel literature.
